FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — This year’s Red Deer Horse Expo will feature an award-winning local horse trainer.

“I’ve always been kind of interested in doing a better job with horses and figuring things out a little better, and so I’ve kind of put the last 30 years into doing just that,” explains Glenn Stewart, the owner of The Horse Ranch in Fort St. John.

Stewart is participating in the Horse Expo this year as part of the “Trainer Showdown: Legends Edition” showcase, working to train an unbroken colt alongside two other trainers over three days.

“We’ll have Friday [April 26th] and Saturday [April 27th] to play with the horse in some sessions. We each get our own time limit to play with the horse each day, and then on the last day [April 28th], we have the finals, and we’ve got a [obstacle] course to go through.”

According to his website, Stewart has spent more than 40 years working with horses, teaching thousands of students and travelling across Canada, the United States, South America and Europe.

He also spent 19 years leading the “Learning Holiday Adventure High & Wild,” a 160-kilometre annual trek on horseback through the Rocky Mountains.

At The Horse Ranch, Stewart runs a horse development program, training riders of all skill levels over the course of two to four-day clinics to build confidence and muscle memory.

He also has a long resume of success in horsemanship competitions, winning the 2019 and 2021 “Heart of the Horse” colt starting competitions and the 2010 “Cowboy Up Challenge” at the Calgary Stampede.

Stewart says he’s also going to be doing some presentations and horsemanship demonstrations throughout the weekend in Red Deer.

“It’s probably the biggest horse event that there is in Canada,” he says.

He encourages residents interested in horsemanship to make the trip to Red Deer for the event later this month.

According to a press release, the Horse Expo is marketed as “the largest equine expo in the country.” It is expected to attract 20,000 attendees, and other attractions include more than 250 vendors and art and fashion shows.
