CHARLIE LAKE, B.C. — Peter Oliphant, a golf professional with over 25 years of experience, joined Lakepoint Golf Club this February.

Oliphant came to the Charlie Lake club from the Peace Portal Golf Club in Surrey and says that he chose the Fort St. John area because he knew he’d be part of a “tight-knit community.”

“Working in a big city golf club sometimes takes away the aspect of a close community,” said Oliphant. “In the Fort St. John area, I get to know all the people associated with the course.”

One of Oliphant’s career highlights is working at the storied Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario.

While there, he witnessed Tiger Woods’ historic win at the 2000 Canadian Open, which included a dramatic bunker shot on the 18th hole en route to victory.

The win gave Woods a “Triple Crown,” winning the U.S., British, and Canadian Open tournaments in a single calendar year.

Oliphant’s career has seen him go around the world, with stops in the United States, Asia and Europe.

Lakepoint General Manager Forrest Liddicoat says the decision to hire a new golf pro came down to finding a “new leader.”

“We needed someone who could teach our young professionals here at Lakepoint,” said Liddicoat. “He’s been fitting in nicely so far, and we’ve received positive feedback from our members.”

“The club looks forward to Peter assisting anyone who wants to grow their golf game.”

Clubs around the Peace Region are anticipating their courses opening for the season.

Liddicoat says that Lakepoint’s golf simulators and pro shop are currently open, and the course will be ready in the first week of May, weather permitting.

On April 6th, Lone Wolf Golf Club in Taylor will hold a “work bee” event to put the finishing touches on their course before it opens.

The Fort St John Links Golf Course has yet to provide an opening date for the season.
