Behind the Scenes

Hi all,
I’m sure most of you have seen my name on the website by now, but just in case, I’m Shay. I’ve been a news reporter at Energeticcity.ca for nearly two years. I’ve written countless articles ranging from small-town politics to heartbreaking court cases. I also helped cover the devastating wildfire season in 2023.
Now that my time here has ended, I wanted to say goodbye to you all, thank you for the support and tell the story of how I got into journalism.
I’ve been passionate about writing since I was 6 to 7. My stories went through a few different genres as I grew older, but I kept writing in my spare time.
Latest Stories
When I saw Energeticcity.ca was looking for a news reporter, I thought, why not? I didn’t have a degree, but I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, so I applied.
It wasn’t long until the company’s owner, Adam Reaburn, asked for written submissions, which I happily provided. Somehow, he liked what I wrote, and so did the news director, Tre Lopushinsky. Tre also seemed to like me because it wasn’t long after the interview that I was offered the job.
The first week was a bit rough due to my mental health, but Tre worked with me to get me to where I was more comfortable. I continued to work on my mental health and improve my writing skills in the past two years. The stress and pressure (solely self-imposed) recently became too much for me.
I liked being a journalist and love the people I’ve worked with over the years, but I knew I needed a change. I have accepted a job locally and will be staying in Fort St. John, but my journalism career ended at Energeticcity.ca on Friday.
I would like to thank Tre and Adam for taking a chance on me and everyone in the building for their support and laughs over the years. I’d also like to give a special shout-out to Tre, Jordan Prentice, Spencer Hall, Katherine Caddel, and Grace Giesbrecht for helping me grow and learn as a journalist and a writer. I appreciate all of you and will miss you all very much.
