UPDATE: Peace region athletes bring home six medals from BC Winter Games

Peace region athletes brought home one gold, two silver and two bronze medals from the Lhtako Quesnel 2024 BC Winter Games last month.

LHTAKO DENE NATION, B.C. — Peace region athletes brought home one gold, two silver and three bronze medals from the Lhtako Quesnel 2024 BC Winter Games last month.

Representing the Cariboo-North East zone, athletes from across the area participated in the games, contributing to the zone’s total of 32 medals.

The Cariboo-North East zone accumulated nine gold, ten silver, and 13 bronze medals at the game, ranking sixth out of eight zones that competed in the games.

Of the zone’s five medals, four were won by Dawson Creek athletes representing Peace River South. Three medals were won in judo, and one medal was earned in curling.  

Dawson Creek’s Dax Norman earned the gold medal, competing in the Boys -73 kg event,  and Charlie Lake’s Charles Jordan won bronze competing in the Boys -42 kg event. 

Jordan, Norman, and Tyson MacDonald earned bronze along with 17 other athletes in judo’s Mixed Team Competition.

Dawson Creek’s Joey Webb, along with four other athletes within the Cariboo-North East zone, brought home a silver medal in curling’s Girls Team Competition event.

Kelly Amonson, also from Dawson Creek, competed in two cross-country skiing events. The final standings for each event can be found here. 

Representing Peace River North, Matthew Robinson of Fort St. John and Tommy Rivers-Bowerman of Charlie Lake made up half of the under-14 Team Kumite, who won silver in karate’s  Male Team Event. 

Ava Kurjata, from Charlie Lake, along with six teammates, earned a bronze medal in badminton in the Tier 2 Team Event.

Max Wu, Arjen Pos, Taha Ahmed and Tara Ashrafi from Fort St. John, along with Montney’s Maria Hansen, competed in multiple speed skating events. The final standings for each event can be found here.

Charlie Lake figure skater Madyn Peebles placed eighth in the Juvenile Ladies event with a final score of 26.76. 

Fort St. John’s Jarrett Lawson, and Fort Nelson’s Maggie Lamouche-Twin each competed in an archery event. The final standings can be found here. 

The Lhtako Quesnel 2024 BC Winter Games took place from February 22nd to 25th, with over 800 athletes, 210 coaches, and 132 officials from across the province in attendance.

The event took place on the traditional territory of the Lhatko Dene Nation, which partnered with the City of Quesnel to host the event.
