HUDSON’S HOPE B.C. — The five candidates looking to fill the vacant councillor seat in the District of Hudson’s Hope participated in an all-candidates forum on Saturday.

Held at Hudson’s Hope Community Hall, the forum allowed candidates to introduce themselves and speak on the district’s issues and solutions they would take if elected. Residents were also able to approach the candidates with questions regarding key issues.

Topics discussed at the forum included addressing economic issues in the district, providing clean water, and driving population growth. Other issues brought up included maintaining health care services and infrastructure.

One resident asked what outlook the candidates would have in addressing failing businesses in the area, noting that the district has lost a gas station and a hardware store and is down to only one restaurant.

Another resident asked what ideas candidates have to attract more people to drive population growth in the district to support businesses.

Peace River Regional District director Jordan Kealy came to the forum and asked how they would advocate for outside help regarding water issues, getting grants or other assistance from the province.

Candidates were also asked about what they believe is working in the district.

One resident who had been living in the district for two years did not have a question and instead complimented the district on the solid volunteer community, summer festivals, and bringing the community together in a positive way.

The candidates for the councillor position are Nicole Gilliss, Greta Goddard, Joseph King, Valerie Paice, and Kimberly Stacey.

The by-election was called after Kelly Miller’s resignation in October.

Advancing voting will take place on Wednesday, February 14th, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

General voting will happen on Saturday, February 24th, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

The full all-candidates forum can be viewed below or on the Hudson’s Hope Lions Club’s Facebook page.
