FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — An interactive LED public art installation called The TUNNEL is coming to Fort St. John next week.

The 100-foot tunnel of lights will be installed near the stage in Centennial Park during the High on Ice Winter Fest. It will remain in the park until March 3rd.

The TUNNEL has a custom, interactive console that allows users to become the “pilot” to guide other guests through.

The City of Fort St. John says each button controls an aspect of the light programming, such as speed, colour, fade and patterns.

The structure will also run on its own for hours.

“After the 2023 launch of our City Arts and Culture Framework, we are excited to bring our winter city another interactive public art installation– it will be a focal point that brings people together and builds community connections,” said Eryn Griffith, arts and culture manager for the city.

BIG ART has taken The Tunnel on a global tour produced by Creos. The TUNNEL has recently travelled through the United States and Australia, and Fort St. John is its only stop in northern B.C.

According to the city, the temporary installation is partly funded by a federal government grant and local sponsorship from CN, Co-op, Tourmaline and AltaGas.
