An emergency kit should have essentials such as a blanket, warm clothing, food, water and a first aid kit.

“It’s important to adjust your driving speed to the road conditions, recognizing that posted speed limits are for ideal conditions,” ICBC said in a release.

The insurance corporation says drivers must keep their eyes on the road by avoiding distractions like cell phones.

“During longer trips, use highway rest stops to stretch, take a break and check your messages. Pull over at the nearest rest area as soon as you start to feel drowsy.”

If holiday celebrations include alcohol or drugs, ICBC asks residents to plan for a safe ride home.

Check road conditions on DriveBC’s website before hitting the highway.
