Traffic stop leads to two arrests

The BC Highway Patrol arrested a 19-year-old man after conducting a traffic stop on Monday.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The BC Highway Patrol arrested two individuals after conducting a traffic stop on Monday.

Officers were conducting traffic enforcement after 8 p.m., targeting impaired drivers on Highway 97 north of Fort St. John.

The highway patrol stopped a vehicle, and the driver was recognized from an interaction with police a few days prior.

The 19-year-old driver was displaying signs of impairment, according to police.

Mounties searched the driver and found approximately 25 grams of suspected cocaine and a large sum of cash, as well as paraphernalia often found in drug trafficking.

The 19-year-old driver was arrested at the scene.

Police say the other passengers in the vehicle were identified, and one man was wanted on multiple outstanding warrants. The passenger was also arrested and held in custody for a bail hearing.

“Investigations such as this highlight the dynamic and dangerous work that members of the BC Highway Patrol undertake on a daily basis,” said Corporal Wyatt Wright, BC Highway Patrol Fort St John.

“Proactive traffic enforcement contributes to the broader efforts of the BC RCMP to combat ongoing criminal activities.”
