Flyers, Huskies to honour former teammate who recently lost cancer battle

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Fort St. John Huskies and Fort St. John Senior Flyers will honour former teammate Austin Braid, who recently lost his battle with cancer, during this weekend’s games. 

According to a post on the Flyers’ Facebook page, the 29-year-old had been fighting brain cancer for some time. He skated with the Flyers during the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 seasons. 

“[Braid] was a very solid, dependable individual who played an important role in our North Peace Hockey League (NPHL) Campbell Cup Championship in March of 2018,” the post reads. 

The Flyers will observe a moment of silence in honour of Braid during their home game against the Spirit River Rangers this Saturday. 

Prior to his time with the Flyers, Braid played for the Huskies during the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 seasons.

A post on the Huskies’ Facebook page says the organization will remember Braid as “a leader that helped institute change in Huskies culture that led to future success.”

The Huskies will also take a moment of silence in honour of Braid during Friday’s home game against the Grande Prairie Wheat Kings.
