FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Local speed skating enthusiasts had the opportunity to hit the ice with Olympic medalist Denny Morrison at the Fort St. John Elks’ Skate with an Olympian event last weekend.

The Fort St. John Elks Speed Skating Club hosted the event, which took place at the oval in the Pomeroy Sport Centre, in honour of Speed Skating Week.

Last month, city council proclaimed November 12th to 18th as Speed Skating Week.

Morrison, who is a former Fort St. John resident and Elk, says returning to the city for the event brought up memories from the early stages of his speed skating career.

“It’s just so cool to be called back to Fort St. John and see how this club keeps developing and keeps pumping out new standards,” said Morrison.

“It brings me back because I was the Olympian, I got a few medals in my career, and my name resonates with the club.”

Morrison says he felt “lucky and privileged” to be able to come back to Fort St. John and thank the volunteers who devote countless hours of their time to the Elks.

“This is such a volunteer and community-based program. The volunteers are the backbone of this sport,” said Morrison.

“I am thankful for the volunteers, and I’m thankful for this club. I’m inspired to see this building so full of energy and vibrancy, and the future of speed skating here in Fort St. John.”
