Site C returns to original start of fall 2024 for reservoir filling
The filling of the Site C reservoir will begin on schedule in the fall of 2024 instead of an early start this fall.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The filling of the Site C reservoir will begin on schedule in the fall of 2024 instead of an early start this fall.
The dam was initially scheduled to be filled in 2024 until it was announced last year that it could take place as early as fall 2023.
The decision to return to the original project timeline was due to critical work that still needs to be completed, according to Bob Gammer, manager of Site C community relations.

Specifically, he says the approach channel spillway and powerhouse intake gates must be completed.
“The approach channel is where water in the reservoir is directed to the intakes,” Gammer explained.
“The intake gates are necessary to control the flow of water into the facility and to allow for maintenance to occur safely. The spillway gates are used to control the release of water via the spillway.”
Gammer says the window to begin reservoir filling safely is closing due to the winter weather, resulting in BC Hydro deciding to stay on track with the original project schedule.

“The project remains on track to achieve first power in 2024 and to have all six generating units in service by 2025,” Gammer said.
“And the project will be completed within the approved budget.”
The reservoir filling process will take four months at a varying rate of 0.3 to two metres per day. Once completed, the reservoir will be approximately three times wider than the Peace River.
The deepest parts of the reservoir will be approximately 52 metres near the dam, with shallower areas around Hudson’s Hope being 18 metres.
