FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The North Peace Eagles Women’s Hockey Association has returned to the ice for its first session of the season — welcoming players of all skill levels.

According to the association’s director of media and communications, Cecilia Chan, the Eagles split their season into two sessions.

“October to December is Session A, and then Session B starts from January to March,” said Chan.

Session A is currently full, with 42 players registered. Registration for Session B opens in December.

The North Peace Eagles were established in the 1970s and belonged to the Peace Country Female Hockey League. Unfortunately, the league folded due to the pandemic.

Chan says the Eagles now fall into an “open women’s hockey league.”

“Sometimes, when younger girls in their teens age out of minor hockey, they will come to play with us,” said Chan.

“So, I would say we are an older ladies’ team that travels and plays hockey.”

The Eagles usually have ice time on Wednesdays and have some games lined up against other women’s teams in the Peace region.

“We have a tournament in Dawson [Creek] on the November 4th weekend,” said Chan. “I believe there are six women’s teams in that tournament, including us.”

Chan says she looks forward to the season ahead and hopes to get more women involved in hockey.

“It’s a fun sport for everyone. We welcome all skill levels. We even have beginners who have never played hockey before,” said Chan.

“We encourage people to come out and try it if they never have before.”

More information about the North Peace Eagles or how to register can be found on the team’s Facebook page.
