FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The City of Fort St. John’s Youth Advisory Council had just 126 local youth complete a survey, despite multiple methods of encouragement to participate.

The survey, which was conducted for Fort St. John youth ages 13 to 18, was advertised at YAC’s Youth Conference and on the city’s website. YAC also emailed local schools, parent advisory councils, and sports groups.

The survey asked its participants if they participated in any activities for youth. More than half said they didn’t, with 81 youth saying no, and 45 saying yes.

YAC then asked local youth what kind of activities they participated in specifically across five categories – sports, music, arts, performing arts, and youth groups.

Sports had the highest number, with 24 participants. Youth groups followed with 12, and music, performing arts, and arts came in last with less than 10 participants in each category.

An example from YAC’s youth survey ( YAC )

When asked about a “Drop-In Centre” that acted as a safe, inclusive, indoor space for youth to gather, 65 participants said they would frequent the centre, and 61 said they would not.

The survey states YAC has been struggling to find new members, with most of its current members in grade 12 and leaving the council after the school year. When asked if survey participants were interested in joining YAC, 103 said no, and 23 said yes.

The next steps for YAC are to determine the council’s long-term goals and what youth want to get out of YAC.

More information about YAC and how to join can be found on the city’s website.
