CHETWYND, B.C. — The District of Chetwynd announced it will not accept burn permit requests until further notice.
According to fire chief Dan Golob, the decision, effective immediately, is due to the warm weather and dry conditions.
Backyard fires that measure .5 metres by .5 metres or less are still permitted in the District Fire Protection area.
For backyard fires, precautions must be taken, such as keeping a water source nearby and not lighting fires on windy days.
Violating the order will result in a $200 fine plus cost recovery for mitigation efforts if a fire becomes out of control.
There are currently ten wildfires in the Peace River area, all of which are under control or being held.
Another wildfire north of Halfway River was discovered Monday night around 7:30 p.m. The fire is under control at approximately 4 hectares. The cause is still under investigation.
To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, please call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.
