UPDATE: The story was changed with additional information from the Fort St. John Fire Department.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The local bottle depot and a neighbouring building were damaged in an early morning fire on Monday, according to the Fort St. John Fire Department.

Deputy Fire Chief Matt Troiano said the fire, which began outside FSJ Return-It, extended into the bottle depot’s ceiling and through to the building next to it.

Troiano said the department responded with 21 firefighters, including two fire engines, a tender, a ladder truck and four command units used by officers providing command support.

Troiano said crews arrived on scene to see heavy black smoke from the rear of the structure.

“Crews were able to initially knock down the fire early on in the incident, but we met some difficulties chasing the fire through the void spaces between the two structures and into the roof of the noble building,” Troiano said.

Crews were reportedly on the scene for approximately three hours.

No injuries were reported.

The fire is still under investigation.
