FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A few lucky local students and two teachers will have the opportunity to attend a youth water, energy and climate summit in Alberta next month

North Peace Secondary School (NPSS) was invited to attend the Generate and Navigate Youth Environmental Leadership Summit in Canmore, Alberta, along with 19 Alberta-based high schools from March 16th to 19th.

At the summit, six students and two teachers from each school will experience science, technology, and innovations to help shape their futures, according to the Inside Education Society, which hosts the event.

Devon Pearce and Catriona Imray, two environmental science teachers at NPSS, will attend the summit with six students from their classes.

“We asked the students in our classes because, naturally, they were more likely to be interested in something like this, so we put it out, and I think we got four students from my class and two from Catriona’s,” Pearce explained.

Imray said six students needed to attend, and Pearce added it worked out that exactly six students were interested.

“So we didn’t even have to cut anybody or make tough decisions. It was perfect,” he said.

Each team of students will participate in hands-on activities and collaborative workshops that feature experts from the industry, government, academia and the non-government sector, as well as youth and Indigenous leaders.

Once the students complete the summit, each team will develop and deliver an education and action plan based on what they learned at the summit.

Pearce said the action plan could be anything from giving lessons to elementary schools or starting a recycling program at the high school.

He also said he hopes the summit will kick off an environmental awareness club or campaign to continue each year.

North Peace Secondary School students attended the conference last in 2018.

Inside Education is Alberta’s largest environmental and natural resource education charity that supports Kindergarten to grade 12 school teachers across the province.
