UPDATE: Alaska Highway open at Sikanni Chief

UPDATE (as of 10am Sunday) – Highway is open to light duty pickups, cars, RV’s and travel trailers. The bridge remains single lane alternating traffic. Obey signs and traffic control. For updates on when commercial traffic will be allowed across the bridge, visit www.drivebc.ca

UPDATE: According to the Prince George Fire Centre, due to the vehicle incident, the bridge in close proximity has been impacted and BC Wildfire Service personnel are standing by should the incident spread into the forest. George Smith with Public Services and Procurement Canada says an engineer is on the way to assess and RCMP are doing their investigation.

UPDATE (6 a.m. Friday): The Highway remains closed. We are expecting an update on the status of the Highway by 12 p.m. Friday. Traffic is still being turned around at Sikanni Chief. Here is a photo from Drivebc.ca

ORIGINAL STORY:

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Alaska Highway is closed at Sikanni Chief due to a vehicle collision.

According to pictures and posts shared on social media, the Highway is closed in both directions at the Sikanni Chief bridge.

Due to the location of the motor vehicle collision, a detour is not available.

At this time, the RCMP have not released any information about the collision and we will update this post when more information becomes available.
