FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The City of Fort St. John has deployed steam crews to thaw catch basins throughout the city to alleviate flooding brought on by warmer temperatures.
Ryan Harvey, the communications coordinator with the city, says for each warm stretch this winter, the city has had crews working to thaw the basins to allow them to stay clear and take on the water that’s formed from melting ice.
“With the warming temperatures over the last couple of days, we’ve increased [the number of crews out]. We have two city crews out [Thursday] and three contracted crews out, all dealing with trouble spots,” Harvey said.
Harvey says crews are operating on a priority basis, with properties at risk of flooding being the highest. Crews will then tackle the main streets.
“We’ve got crews out and that will continue to be out for as long as needed,” Harvey said.
Residents can report flooding by their property by calling 3-1-1, reporting it on the Waste Wise app, or by using the report a problem form on the city’s website.
