FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Métis Nation of British Columbia (MNBC) announced $3,880,000 in new funding Monday for Skills Training, Employment, and Post-Secondary (STEPS).

Along with this new funding, MNBC’s Cabinet has also voted to increase the lifetime funding support cap for STEPS programs and services from $25,000 to $50,000.

This increase of $25,000 will help address the rising costs of skills training and tuition at post-secondary schools.

“We know the cost of living has increased year-over-year and it impacts our youth,” says Dean Gladue, MNBC Minister of Employment Skills Training.

“Our Cabinet recognizes these challenges, which is why we are providing greater flexibility and opportunities for Métis students to achieve their educational dreams and goals.

Of the new funding, $1,040,000 will provide additional support to students, including community-based programming and the MNBC training institute.

Some of the $2 million in funding will go directly to the MNBC Chartered Communities to support STEPS programming and support.

“The pandemic has a severe impact on our Métis youth, students, and Chartered Communities,” says Susie Hooper, MNBC Minister of Post-Secondary Education.

“Providing more supports directly to our communities and students is vital to ensure our Nation has a successful recovery from the pandemic.”

MNBC will also be investing $425,000 in special programming and support focused on Métis businesses and employers, Métis women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

The Canadian Government provided the funding to provide support for Métis students to address increased costs and financial concerns resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
