DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – The Rotary Clubs of Dawson Creek are asking council to recognize a park as “The Ken Haverland Park”.
The strip of land at 1901 98th Ave, which the Rotary Clubs of Dawson Creek purchased and donated to the city is the park in question, according to a letter issued to council.
Ken Haverland was the 3rd District Governor in 1991-92 for the Rotary Club of Dawson Creek. He was the owner of Kenver Equipment and the letter states was an outstanding citizen and promotor of Dawson Creek and Rotary.
In 2000, Kaverland and a fellow Rotarian rode bicycles from the Arctic and Pacific Oceans in Alaska to the Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland as part of the End Polio Now campaign.
The clubs are unable to name a park “Rotary” as it is a registered trademark and permission from Rotary International would be needed.
The park naming would be in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Dawson Creek’s 70th anniversary as well as the 20th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Dawson Creek Sunrise.
The letter will be discussed at the upcoming June 14th Regular Council Meeting.
