FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The week of May 2nd to 8th is Emergency Preparedness Week across Canada, and the Fort St. John Fire Department spent Tuesday honing their skills.

Tuesday, May 4th was International Firefighters Day, so it was fitting that Captain Caughill spent the day with ‘D crew’ practicing fire suppression tactics and search skills at the training facility.

Deputy Fire Chief Robert Norton says the Fort St. John Fire Department has a great training facility to teach live-fire training events.

“This was the fourth in a series we have been conducting for our crews,” says Norton. “We are fortunate to have such a fantastic training facility at our disposal. These training opportunities allow our suppression crews to work on critical fire suppression and rescue skills in a realistic and challenging environment.”

Norton has some simple tips for residents during Emergency Preparedness Week.

“We are encouraging residents to understand the hazards in their area, gather up supplies they might need in an emergency such as an emergency kit, and also to take the time to make a plan for you and your household.”

The city’s website has information on community preparedness, including a preparation checklist.
