FORT ST. JOHN, B.C – A local Grade 6 student has won a provincial forest week artwork and photography contest with her Peace Region inspired artwork.

The National Forest Week youth artwork and photography contest sponsored by FORED B.C had a theme of ‘Healthy Forests – Healthy Future’ for its 100th anniversary.

Sophie Zaldy, a student at Ecole Central Elementary, is one of four winners for her artwork for the contest.

Sophie’s mom, Rie Sasaki, told that she loved drawing since she was little.

“She spends lots of free time drawing and sketching, so it was great to see she received some recognition. She is now interested in trying out other contests too,” says Sasaki.

The inspiration for drawing the waterfall comes from a kayaking trip her family took in Hudson’s Hope last summer.

“The peace region has so much beautiful nature, and that inspired her,” says Sasaki.

Entries were sent in from youth ranging from ages 5 to 18 as part of FORED’s Youth Engaging Sustainability (YES) program.
