DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – The Louisiana-Pacific board of directors will vote later this month on a plan to convert the OSB mill in Dawson Creek to a new siding mill.

The mill would produce a new product from LP called SmartSide siding. According to the LP website, “SmartSide siding is a complete line of high-performance trim and siding products to complement almost any building style. All LP SmartSide products feature our innovative, four component SmartGuard manufacturing process for strength and to resist fungal decay and termites”.

According to a post on Facebook, Dawson Creek Mayor Dale Bumstead says if the mill is converted to produce the new product, another 50 to 60 jobs will be created on top of the 160 that are currently employed at the OSB mill.

LP CEO Brad Southern said this decision was made because of growth on the West Coast, and a desire to lower risk. “Key factors that differentiated this site are timing to first board, wood cost, cost of production, proximity to our West Coast customer base, and reduced operational risk due to the fact that Dawson Creek is currently staffed and producing OSB.” LP leadership will request board approval for this conversion project in July once the detailed engineering and design is complete.
