No delay in Disaster Financial Assistance due to potential Canada Post strike

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The government of BC announced today that there will be no delay for those receiving disaster financial assistance due to the floods that crushed the Peace River region.

The province will work with the Regional District, and ditch the usual cheque delivered by mail and will instead deliver them directly to local authority who will then arrange for delivery. In Dawson Creek, city staff will hand-deliver the cheques to residents.

As of today, there have been 144 applications for disaster financial assistance from residents in the Peace River Regional District. There has been $70,000 in payments made so far. The deadline to submit a claim does not close until September 15, 2016.

Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) has been authorized for Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, Fort St. John, Hudson’s Hope, Peace Coupe, Taylor, Tumbler Ridge, as well as the first nations communities of Saulteau and West Moberly.

Since 2007, DFA has paid $19 million to help those recover from disasters.
