Two-thirds of Canadians against Trump as president: Insights West
FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — With the intricate and quirky Iowa Caucuses now officially over, the 2016 U.S. presidential election campaign is now officially underway.
Still, nearly a dozen candidates are seeking the Republican nomination to oppose one of two declared and plausible Democratic candidates — both with glaring voter vulnerabilities.
One is 74-year-old Vermont Senator, Bernie Sanders: a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, whose credentials, for many Americans seem more suited for the office of Swedish Prime Minister, than U.S. President.
The other is 68 year old-former First Lady, former New York Senator, former Secretary of State: Hilary Clinton, who, if she can find a way to avoid going to prison in the wake of a FBI criminal investigation, could become—on her second attempt—the first female U.S. President.
That could lead one to believe the White House door is wide open for the GOP, but it’s now mired in what appears to be a nation-wide voter backlash against so-called ‘established politicians,’ and although he lost in Iowa to Texas Senator Ted Cruz, 69-year-old billionaire businessman Donald Trump, remains the man to beat.
That’s turned up some very interesting reaction on this side of the border. Last year, the two best-perceived political allies of big businessmen, the Alberta and Federal Conservative governments, both suffered election defeats.
According to Vice-President for Public Affairs, Mario Canseco, a new Insights West online poll aimed at determining who would be the best U.S. President for this country, has found that two-thirds of Canadians — including 81 per cent of British Columbians — don’t want Trump.
Mario had no specific poll results for Northeast B.C., but he did share some information which might suggest — the 1990s electoral leanings of this area are still in play, and it could be the Donald’s B.C. Trump Card.
Meantime, despite the fact the polls show more than 55 per cent of Americans don’t trust her — 55 percent of Canadians believe Hilary Clinton would be the best U.S. President for Canada.
