Edmonton RCMP give advice for smart online shopping
EDMONTON, A.B. — The Edmonton RCMP detachment has issued a list of tips to shop smart and avoid fraud when buying or selling items through the internet or smart phones/devices.
Police say the number of people shopping online has steadily grown over the years, as has the methods of using the internet to sell and buy products and services.
Online window shoppers should be aware that the picture of an item listed for sale on line may not be the actual item, and ensure that the description is accurate, that the person selling the item has the authority to do so, and that there are not any hidden ‘fees’ or costs.
If you’re meeting someone to look at an item, RCMP advise you do so in a public place during the daylight hours — and to bring a friend if possible. Or, if you have a stranger coming to view an item at your house, ask the buyer for identification.
Finally, RCMP noted that, if the deal sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.
