The fifth annual Crystal Cup will be held February 12-14. Normally coinciding with the High on Ice winter festival, this year’s pond hockey tournament will be held the weekend after.

Crystal Cup president Neil Evans said the change in dates is simply to make sure the event runs a bit more smoothly.

“There’s no bad blood between us and the City it just logistically was not working for us having it on the stat holiday. We very much appreciate the City and the High on Ice event and being a part of that for the first four years of our event. It’s hard to get help out on the stat holiday, and hard to get stuff returned on the staff holiday,”

Plans for this year’s event remain similar to last year with 40 teams making up the main division and Mr. Mike’s working the gardens. New however will be a Coal Cup division for teams with players 40 years old or above, and a pancake breakfast. Efforts are also in the works to make the event more child and family friendly.

Registration opens December 15 and runs until February 1. The cost to take part is $200 and registration can be done at Ernie’s Sports Experts.
