Canada red falls to Sweden in bronze medal game

After watching Canada red through preliminary round action, the thought of them leaving the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge without a medal would have been hard to imagine. Unfortunately for them that’s exactly what happened as after firing a combined 81 shots on goal in the semifinals and bronze medal game, they could only muster two goals, both of which came against Russia on Friday night.

After losing 3-0 to Sweden, Canada red head coach Kris Knoblauch said the execution was there from his team but they ran into hot goalies in consecutive games.

“I thought our last five periods of play we played so well. Yeah there have been some mistakes but for us to play the five periods that we had and not being rewarded with a goal has been pretty heartbreaking for our guys but the effort was there,” he said.

Canada red goalie Michael DiPietro got another start in goal and stopped 17 of the 20 shots he faced in the game.
