Approximately 40 players are expected to be on the ice at the Pomeroy Sport Centre come Friday when the Fort St. John Huskies begin this year’s training camp. The team will be on the ice Friday, and Saturday night, along with Sunday afternoon with a handful of cuts to be made shortly after.
The most interesting battle will take place between the pipes as approximately ten goalies are expected to audition over the three days.
Club GM Jeremy Clothier said finding a potential top goalie is the main goal, and previous starting goalie Travis McLean will be lending a hand in evaluating the prospects.
“We’re hoping we can find somebody that can be the number one guy. Having Travis around for the weekend will help. With being a goalie it’s easy for him to see what goalies can do; what styles they play in, if he can work with them, or if they’ve already got enough talent that he just has to tweak some things. Having some experience to help us look at the goaltenders is definitely going to help.”
Clothier added that he’s been in contact with Gary and Todd Alexander on a regular basis throughout the off season, and knows they are looking forward to getting started as well.
“I’ve talked to both of them quite a bit. They’re excited to get going. It’s that time of the year now we’ve put all summer into building the camp up so now it’s time to get on the ice. With the number of bodies they’re looking forward to seeing what’s out there and filling holes that we were missing last year.
Depending on the actual number of skaters that come out the team plans to cut down to approximately 30 players at the end of Sunday. A second round of cuts is expected to come at the end of the team’s exhibition schedule.
