A gas leak along the Alaska Highway was quickly contained over the lunch hour today.

The Fort St. John fire department responded the call around 12:18 p.m., shutting down a portion of the frontage road outside the Wendy’s restaurant, while patrons looked on. The road was reopened by 1 p.m.

An excavation crew was working in a vacant lot next to the restaurant when the struck the line.

The crew was aware of one gas line running beneath the lot, but an adjacent service line was undetected by the crew, said Golob.

“It was purely an accident,” Golob said.

Surrounding businesses were not evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
