RCMP in Chetwynd are investigating after dozens of mailboxes at the local post office were busted open and the contents stolen.

Cpl. Dave Tyreman with the North District RCMP says the thefts occured at some point between 9 p.m. May 31, and 6 a.m. June 1 at the post office on 50th Street.

Some 27 boxes were broken into, said Tyreman. Some of the stolen mail was later found discarded near the post office.
Tyreman believes the individual or group responsible were probably searching for personal and sensitive information.

“We’re assuming whoever it was was probably filtering through it, looking for credit card bills, pension cheques, whatever it may be,” he said.

“Nobody knows exactly what all was in there.”

Tyreman is urging residents who were expecting important mail this week, such as a cheque, to notify the respective companies to advise of them of the situation.

RCMP are asking anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area during the time the thefts occured to call them at 250-788-9221 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Officers continue to canvas the area, looking for outside surveillance video or anyone who may have information.

Theft of mail is an offence under Canada’s Criminal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
