Structure fire leaves one person dead in Grande Prairie

The Grande Prairie Fire Department, along with the RCMP and other emergency responders were called to a structure fire in the area of 94th Avenue and 102nd Street last night at approximately 11:30 p.m.

“When the fire department arrived the structure was fully involved,” writes Cpl. Roy Kennedy of the Grande Prairie RCMP. “Witnesses on scene indicated that a person might be inside, however it was unsafe for firefighters to perform offensive operations.”

The fire was deemed under control at 1:40 a.m.

Although the structure was believed to be an unoccupied residence, a search confirmed a deceased male inside.

The deceased has been identified as a 41-year-old male from Grande Prairie.

His name is not being released pending notification of next of kin.

The Grande Prairie Fire Department and the RCMP continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

An autopsy will be performed on the deceased to help determine a cause of death.
