SEATTLE — A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office says a B.C. soccer coach accused of seeking sex with a girl remains locked up in Washington state.

Kuldip (KUL’-deep) Mahal of Surrey, B.C., was arrested last week after visiting a park in Burlington, Wash., to meet the supposed 12-year-old who was actually an undercover officer.

The office alleges Mahal, 47, responded to a Craigslist posting, sent multiple sexually explicit messages and photos and is accused of repeatedly asking the supposed girl to send him similar photos of herself.

U.S. Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Emily Langlie says Mahal appeared Monday for a detention hearing in Seattle, Wash.

She says the judge ordered him detained because there was no way for U.S. authorities to monitor him by GPS if he was allowed to return to Canada.

Surrey soccer club has suspended the youth coach, and Langlie says his next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 18.
