SURREY, B.C. — One man is dead in Surrey, B.C., following an officer-involved shooting that is now under investigation by the province’s police watchdog.

The Independent Investigations Office says the incident took place just after 8 a.m. near a Safeway store in the North Surrey community known as Whalley.

It says the man took off when Transit Police approached, but officers tracked him down, shots were fired and he was transported to hospital where he died.

The agency says Mounties secured physical evidence at the scene and were waiting for the arrival of investigators.

It says investigators will identify witnesses, obtain video surveillance and contact the man’s next of kin.
