The project, first announced in the 2014 Capital Budget, aims to expand affordable internet to 280,000 Canadians who live in communities under served by internet service providers.
“Our government has listened to Canadians’ concerns about the need to upgrade telecommunications infrastructure in rural areas”, MP Zimmer said. “We are taking action to make sure that as many Canadians as possible have affordable access to the internet and opportunities of the 21st century.”
An investment of up to $305 million over the next 3 years, the conservatives hope to extend access to broadband internet at 5 megabits per second to 98 per cent of Canadian households, providing incentives for the private sector to invest in under served areas in order to meet this goal.
Residents and internet service providers are encouraged to visit the Connecting Canadians website to offer their input on which communities in the region could be eligible to receive funding.
Residents can log on, look up their postal code and leave feedback on the quality of their internet service.
Prince George-Peace River residents without internet service can call MP Bob Zimmer’s office at 613-947-4524 and staff can assist in filling out the survey information.
