The council, which is also made up of Thompson Rivers University, UBC, Simon Fraser University, UVic and Royal Roads, also argues by 2020, 18,800 jobs will go unfilled due to a lack of education and training. Their predictions are based on estimates in the provincial government’s B.C. Labour Market Outlook, as well as B.C. Stats and Statistics Canada data.

There are three proposed solutions to help avoid the shortage, including creating 11,000 new student spaces in university, college and trades training over the next four years, as well as more grants and scholarships and improvements to student loans. They also plan to create Innovate B.C., an initiative to bring government, business, and post-secondary institutions together to build research and innovation potential, and drive economic growth.
