UNBC to offer Master of Education in Counselling for first time in Fort St. John

Betty Powers, Regional Services Coordinator for UNBC’s Fort St. John regional campus, says the program has been offered at the Prince George and Terrace campuses before, but never in our area.

"We've offered the MEd in curriculum and instruction and multi-disciplinary leadership before, but this is the first time we've ever offered counselling up here."

She says there was a clear demand for the program in our region.

"When we had our information sessions we asked what kind of degree they wanted and there was quite a few that said counselling, so that's why we decided to go with that this time and see what our intake was like."

So far the response has been good with 16 of a possible 20 seats filled. The limit is set at 20, as there is a practicum component to the course and there need to be enough placements available. Practicums will take place in northeast B.C.

Anyone interested can still apply to start in January, and the University will ensure they get the required prerequisite course – Counselling Theory – before they start. Powers says students will be able to "easily" make up this semester's course over the duration of the program.
