To commemorate the occasion, the entirety of the Guru Granth Sahib – the religious text of Sikhism – will be read non-stop, without interruption. The reading starts today, and will take approximately 48 hours to complete.
The ceremony will also include Kirtan, which is Sikh devotional music, which will be read after the reading. A free communal meal called Guru Ka Lungar will be served each day from 12 – 2 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m.
Local elected officials have been invited to join in the celebration, as well as members of the original membership that may have moved away. Mayor Lori Ackerman is expected to speak at lunch Saturday, and MLA Pat Pimm at lunch Sunday.
