Federal NDP wants public review of Nexen takeover

The NDP's natural resource critic, Peter Julian, says his party will campaign House of Commons committees that deal with industry, natural resources and the environment asking for hearing on the matter. The opposition also wants Ottawa to create more transparent rules for approving foreign investments like this one.

Julian says the Harper government has been promising improvements for two years, after what he calls the "secretive" rejection of BHP Billiton's takeover of Potash Corporation.

Industry Minister Christian Paradis has already promised he will assess the Nexen takeover by using a net benefits test that will examine the effects on investment, jobs, productivity, competitiveness and national policies.
