Thursday, Northern Health received the keys to the facility, signifying the move made from the design and construction phase to the operational phase of the facility.

To celebrate this achievement, Northern Health has organized a variety of public events encouraging the welcoming of the new facility, while also bidding farewell to the old hospital.

On Saturday, June 2, Northern Health will be extending an offer to anyone interested at taking a sneak peak at the new hospital, by offering a tour of the new facility to the general public.

Tours will be running from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. in groups of 10, and new tours will enter the facility every 15 minutes, providing the public plenty of opportunity to see the new hospital.

The tour will provide those interested a unique look at the new and exciting features, and will include a view of some rooms that those in attendance will hopefully never have to visit, such as the operating rooms.

Anybody interested is welcome to attend the free of charge tour.

One week later, Saturday, June 9, Northern Health will be hosting a free Community BBQ, an event that Maureen Haley, communications officer for Northern Health, says will be a good time to reflect on the old hospital.

“It will be fitting for people to get a chance to say good-bye; the old hospital has served many people and has provided many memories. It will be nice to give people the opportunity to talk about their memories and experiences before we move into the hospital.”

Following the tour this weekend, the new hospital will be subjected to a deep disinfecting, where the entire facility will be sterilized until actual patients begin to be moved in.

Acute care patients will begin to be transferred into the new hospital June 21, the date of the grand opening, while the residential care patients will begin to move in June 24.
