Buick Creek and Fort St. John groups receive funding to fight gangs and domestic violence
Blueberry River Against Gangs, a group in Buick Creek that helps Aboriginal youth avoid gang activity, will receive $100,000 to support their program. It provides those at high risk with individual and family counselling, recreational and arts activities, gang prevention presentations, and cultural programming.
In addition, the North Peace Community Resources Society in Fort St. John has received $5,000 towards its VIP Program. It provides educational presentations on domestic violence to schools and acts as a community resource for dealing with children exposed to domestic violence.
2011 was B.C.'s Civil Forfeiture Office's most successful year since its inception six years ago. In total $5.5 million was given out to local groups and communities to help reduce youth involvement in gangs, prevent violence against women and children, and further crime prevention.
