School District to keep parents informed on strike action

School District 60 Superintendent Larry Espe says there is a contingency plan in place so that students are safe and parents are kept aware.

"We're kind of just waiting to see what the BCTF decides to do… The bottom line is to make sure everyone's safe and everyone's informed as well as possible."

He's meeting with principals tomorrow to discuss the contingency plan and to iron out details, just in case.

After the LRB's announcement, the B.C. Government brought in legislation to bring an end to the teachers dispute, but doesn't impose a contract. Education Minister George Abbott says the legislation imposes a "cooling off" period that suspends all strike and lockout activities. It also appoints a mediator to develop non-binding recommendations by the end of the school year. The bill could take a week to make it through the legislature, which would be enough time for the BCTF to take further strike action.

Espe says the School District will work to keep the public informed through traditional media, social media and the school newsletters. Moose FM and energeticcity-beta.mystagingwebsite.com will continue to update the Peace Region on the status of job action. Information will also be posted at www.prn.bc.ca for School District 60 and www.sd59.bc.ca for School District 59.
