The seniors and their guests were treated to live music, some great food, some prizes and gifts and even a visit from Santa Claus. As they have done for many years, members of the local RCMP detachment serenaded those gathered with some Christmas standards. They were joined by Mayor Mike Bernier, and accompanied by pianist Merrill Flewelling.

“It’s amazing to get dressed up in our full surge and do this for the people, it’s great,” said Cst. Aaron Semeniuk. “They (the residents) appreciate it a lot, you can see that in their faces when they look at us and when the sing along with us, so it was nice.”

Semeniuk is new to the detachment and this was his first time taking part in the event, but despite only one practice, he said he wasn’t really nervous. He said he did benefit from having performed twice with the group earlier that day at Rotary Harbour in downtown Dawson Creek, and at Peace River Haven in Pouce Coupe. He said it was an amazing experience and one he would gladly participate in again if asked.

Mayor Bernier said he has participated in the performance for the last four years after being asked by RCMP members to join them.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “It was amazing crowd, and I can’t believe how many people were out there last night celebrating Christmas, and it was a great to be a part of that with them.”

Bernier is no stranger to singing in front of an audience, having done so professionally for many years, but he said the event at Rotary Manor is special because he knows from personal experience how important it is for seniors in care homes to be with their families during the Christmas season.

“Even for those few moments when you’re entertaining, to see the excitement and the smiles on their faces when the choir is singing is a great opportunity,” he said. “I know it means a lot to them, and it’s a lot of fun for us.”

Bernier performed a couple of solo tunes that evening, including Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas,” and Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song” (“Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire”) – the latter of which he has never performed live before.
