Usually an RCMP officer doesn’t have a smile on their face while placing someone under arrest.

However, taking place on Tuesday, September 6, is the 7th Annual Cops for Cancer Jail N’ Bail, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Fort St. John Totem Mall. The event is organized yearly by local RCMP members who will be participating in the Cops for Cancer- Tour de North bike ride.

The fundraiser involves the nomination of a friend, family member or co-worker to be arrested by local authorities. Once nominated, Fort St. John RCMP will show up at the nominee’s location, “arrest” them and take them to jail, located at the Totem Mall.

Once behind bars, the detainee will have to raise their bail money before they can be released. All bail money raised will be donated to cancer research.

Anyone looking to nominate someone to be arrested can pick up an arrest “warrant” from the North Peace Savings and Credit union, Canadian Tire, Fort Motors or contact the Fort St. John RCMP at 250-787-8133.

All arrests will be made on September 6 and if there is a preferred arrest time for any individual please indicate the time on the warrant form.

Last year, Fort St. John’s generous donations helped raise the most money out of any community in the North for the Cops for Cancer bike ride.

This year’s ride begins in the Energetic City and finishes in Williams Lake, running from September 9-16.
