Independent MLAs call for Natural Gas inquiry
Two independent MLA’s are calling on the Premier to investigate the use of hydraulic fracturing in B.C.
MLA for Delta South Vicki Huntington and MLA for Cariboo North Bob Simpson have written a letter to Premier Clark asking to hold public investigation into the process.
Hunting says “Public policies are driving the rapid expansion of BC’s unconventional gas sector, particularly in shale formations in the Peace Region. It is incumbent on the government to ensure it fully understands the cumulative impacts associated with developing this resource.”
The two MLAs believe there are a number of issues that need to be investigated. Those issues include health concerns, fresh water use, carbon emissions, First Nations rights and other jurisdictions taking a more precautionary approach.
Huntington and Simpson also believe that with a depressed natural gas market, B.C. Is increasingly being pushed to offer more incentive to industry in order to develop these resources.
The MLA’s are calling on the government to fully examine the economic, environmental and health and safety implications before further expansion is encouraged.
In April, the B.C. Ministry of Health Services responded to requests for an inquiry into the health effects of oil and gas activities in the province.
In a statement released at the time, Health Minister Mike de Jong said, “We agree that a review of the possible health effects of this project is a reasonable request and are aware that considerable work around this topic already exists. We are currently working on a plan around the scope and nature of this review.”
