Rising rivers and the possibility of flooding are growing concerns in southern B.C., but despite higher than normal precipitation levels over the winter, the Peace Region has so far escaped water level advisories and warnings.

Officials from the B.C. River Forecast Centre say water levels on the Peace River have not yet been a major concern.

Although they say the Peace has one of the sparsest snowpack monitoring stations, and there can be a considerable amount of variability, the river has near normal levels. However, they also say river levels are expected to rise as a storm system is predicted to move through the area in the coming days.

At that point, they say officials will re-evaluate the Peace’s water levels and determine whether advisories are necessary.

The Province has issued flood warnings for six rivers across B.C., including the Cottonwood River near Quesnel. The swelling river forced a stop work order for crews that were attempting to reinforce the river’s banks.
