The Fort St. John Fire Department and the Fort St. John RCMP responded to a fire early Tuesday morning at the Econo Lodge.
The Fire Department received the call at about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday. Fire Chief Fred Burrows says the fire broke out in the basement in the laundry room of the hotel. Burrows says the hotel quickly filled with smoke and one customer had to be rescued by fire crews.
Police and fire crews will be investigating the fire as they say it appears to be suspicious.
Burrows says they don’t know how the fire started, but it lasted for nearly three hours.
All 16 people staying at the hotel were evacuated and taken to another hotel in the city. No one was injured in the blaze.
