November declared Adoption Awareness Month

November has been declared Adoption Awareness Month in the City of Fort St. John.

Mayor Bruce Lantz made the proclamation at a city council meeting, Monday.

There are approximately 1,200 children that are in foster care homes in the province, with around 300 placed up for adoption each year, says Tina Patterson, an adoption social worker with the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

Patterson says that in the Fort St. John area alone there are between 20 and 30 children waiting to be adopted.

She says the Ministry tries to place children with families that have similar ethnic backgrounds and so it is trying to recruit more First Nations homes for aboriginal children.
