Project to create Montney water database

The B.C. Energy Minister and representatives from Geoscience BC have announced a project to create a comprehensive list of all water sources in the Montney Shale Gas Play area.

The announcement was made, Thursday, at the 2010 Energy Conference being held in Fort St. John.

The project will help determine both surface and subsurface water sources that are available in the Montney area for natural gas producers, as well as for commercial and domestic uses.

Mapping out and determining the various water resources in the area will help the government and regulators to develop policy and make regulatory decisions, says Geoscience BC President and CEO Lyn Anglin.

Anglin says the main purpose of the project is to determine where exactly the water sources are and how much water is available at each source.

The natural gas producers in the area use significant amounts of surface water, says Bill Bennett.

As the industry grows, the amount of water that will be used can be expected to increase. Bennett says the project will provide unbiased data on the different water sources, including deepwater sources. Deepwater sources are not generally part of the water table and have no interaction with surface water.

The project has secured $950,000 in funds for its first phase from Geoscience B.C., the B.C. Oil and Gas Commission’s Science Community and Environmental Knowledge Fund and several natural gas producers that are currently operating in the region. The contributing producers include Encana Corp., Shell Canada and Talisman Energy.

The project is expected to take nine months to finish and should be completed at some point in the spring of 2011.
