The Grande Prairie RCMP seized 137 marijuana plants in city on Thursday morning.

Police got a judicially authorized search warrant to a suspicious residence. It was executed by the Grande Prairie RCMP Drug Section and the Edmonton Green Team.

A 32 year old man is facing charges of production of a substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking marijuana.

He was arrested but shortly after was released from custody. He is now scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on September 9th of this year.

Police say when harvested, 137 marijuana plants would yield approximately 15,000 grams or 60,000 joints. To consume the amount of marijuana seized would take a heavy user approximately 41 years to smoke.

The RCMP says these common signs could indicate a grow-op:

-Few people are seen coming and going from the home;

-There are late night, very short and frequent visits to the residence;

-Residents may only be in the home occasionally for short periods of time.

-Windows covered with dark plastic or newspaper.

-Condensation forms on windows due to high humidity levels inside. This may also result in lack of snow on the roof in winter.

-Skunk-like odor of growing marihuana can occasionally be detected outside.

-Unusual garbage: little or no garbage or unusual items (e.g. a higher than normal volume of pots and soil, fertilizer containers, wiring, PVC piping).

-Electrical equipment inside creates humming sounds.

-Hydro meter is often tampered with or bypassed.

-Grow operations may use other “props” to deflect suspicion. Some of these include: outdoor and/or indoor lights, radio and/or TV on for 24 hours, flyers left in mailbox or on the front steps, children’s toys & bikes outside without children living at the residence, realty signs posted.

-The property has excessive security (guard dogs, “keep out” signs,)
